Erik is a webmaster.
His websites run the gamut from porn to cellphone ringtones, and he's making a fortune off of your kids.
...and they don't even know it.
His con is both simple and fairly common;
Erik collects money from partner sites every time he can get a visitor to a particular website.
This affiliate partnership is common on the web, and lots of good people are making extra money each month by advertising and promoting other people's sites/pages.
*(Affiliate marketing is a sound business model that has worked online for many years, but there will always be a few people who have a hard time choosing 'right' over 'wrong' when given the option.)
Erik doesn't spend time or money on advertising...He's found a sneaky shortcut.
He has bought dozens of domain names that are intentionally mis-spelled...as a child would mis-spell the name. (some own hundreds!)
Each of these domains is pointing to a website that pays him for visitors...and your children are making him a fortune.
For example:
Your 8 year old son goes online to look for something cool that he heard about at school today.
He types in the address that he was told to go to, DISNEY.com
...but his spelling/typing skills aren't yet what they will be, and he spells it DISNY.com
...and Erik's highest-paying porn site shows up, GayBondage.com
Your 8 year old is traumatized...but who cares?
Erik made 11 cents by sending him that link, and your son is among thousands of kids Every Day making the same mistakes.
How many 6 year olds can spell Nickelodeon.com?
...Erik and many scum like him
know how many kids can't spell it each month...and how many hits to AssRippers.com it translated to.
Intentionally mis-spelled domain names are a con...A scam designed specifically to target the defenseless.
Many reputable children's sites are aware of this scam, and are taking measures to put the scum that abuse them out of business.
You can help by first blocking any and all websites that may contain questionable material.
Second, Go to your child's favorite (and potential) sites such as Disney, Nickelodeon*, CartoonPlanet, etc and bookmark these sites in their own folder with your child's name on it.
* One very cool measure mentioned earlier was that Nickelodeon bought the domain NICK.com, making it much easier for kids to find the right website.
** We were recently informed that a member of the Disney online staff has passed this post on to her superiors, and plans have been initiated to begin buying the misspelled variations of their own domain by way of civil suit against the scammers. Wickedly awesome!
Be warned also that, should your child visit the chatrooms, he will be sent links by spammers to porn sites, and even potential viruses.
These are often disguised as "a very funny picture, Check it Out!" by the sender.
