Hi, so cutting through all of the BS, the midtones are simply the range of brightness between the scene's highlights and shadows. If you're standing in the same light as the scene then maybe the palm will work. But measuring off the midtones doesn't necessarily get you a good exposure. For this scene, for 1 exposure, I would use my lightmeter and spot read all of the key elements of the scene and then average those readings. I would exclude the dark area on the right. Using the camera's meter, I would set the metering mode to center-weighted and address the white chapel as I would snow. I would add +1 to the exposure compensation. While this image is properly exposed per histogram, I believe that the white building and walls are over-exposed eliminating all details and most texture. The subject is less interesting than the context. Using a a digital camera, I would exposure bracket the scene and use the best method(s) for good exposure throughout paying particular attention to the detail and texture of the subject. Thanks!
