As any photog can tell you, posting your seconds to the public domain is the shooter's equivalent of a charitable donation.
Primary shots still belong in the portfolio, but when you make your first few passes through your day's shots, hold a few samples back for public release. The exposure is helpful, and you are contributing to the thousands of low-budget sites that simply can't spend $100 for a premium shot.
I chose PublicDomainPictures.net for two reasons; First, they offer free downloads to browsing webmasters who are more than happy to spread a good word about your work, even though your shared shots are not top-shelf. Secondly, they offer premium downloads at just a few pennies each, and low budget sites can use your otherwise-discarded pix for commercial uses.
This gives you a foot in the door in this otherwise untapped market; Your non-prime photos are still out there collecting eyeballs, and spreading the message that you are not just some greedy boner only interested in raking profits alone, but willing to share your work to the thousands of folks who need quality images but can't spend their marketing budget to get them.
You can upload as many as you like, and the hosting is free.
Members can make optional Paypal donations to support your work if they like, and it's a real good feeling when a stranger chooses to buy you a cup of coffee because they liked your photos.
So, that's my point here, I suppose; Contributing first-draft cuts to PublicDomainPictures.net is a feel-good thing that will occasionally pay off in more good feelz.
I'm mildly excited to see a few shots become popular, and can't stop adding new pix.
Did I mention the monthly $100 popularity contest? Any shot that garners premium downloads is eligible, and it's a bit exciting to be in the running.
