There are many ways for spam to end up in your emai, and the following are the most common;
Website promotions...
During the course of marketing your website or home business, you may employ a few (or a few hundred) of the free resources & tools available on the web.
Free submissions, autoresponders, free web-space, link exchanges, traffic exchanges, counters, scripts, forms, payment processors, inboxes...the list is endless...and one of the basic online rules applies in nearly every case; Free Ain't Free...It Always has a price.
generally speaking, the true cost of the freebie is allowing the supplier to add your email to his personal mailing list. While most are honorable business-people, and your personal data is reasonably safe...it only takes one.
One unscrupulous webmaster can resell his list to thousands of spammers...and it happens every day.
Games...
From free lotto games and sweepstakes to the game you just played recently...They all make money by selling their lists to marketing firms.
Surveys...
Addressed in another forum (under Definately Scams), online surveys are nothing more than marketing research at it's finest.
They promise you cash prizes, great gifts, and I'm sure before long they'll be promising to grant you 3 wishes... but the bottom line is that their only goal is to capture personal info for resale.
