A lobbyist not long ago referred to liberal Maryland as a "loving mother" and its skinflint neighbor Virginia as a "stern daddy."
Sure enough, the Old Dominion, still seething about imagined slights from the pre-Civil War era, is not to be trifled with. Offenses that would get you a ticket in most states can mean stiff prison sentences in Virginia, as Jeremy Jaynes of North Carolina learned.
He was found guilty of "felony spamming" and sentenced to nine years in prison. All this happened in Loudoun County, Va., which just happens to be the home of America Online, which holds a lot of sway with Daddy and his legislators.
Jaynes is free on bond while the sentence is appealed and almost surely overturned.
Interestingly, Jaynes' alleged spamming all occurred in his home state of North Carolina, but he was extradited to Virginia because some of his spam passed through servers operated by AOL in Virginia.
*I'm riding the fence on this one...While I have little to no respect for professional spammers, nine years seems a bit excessive. Hats off to AOL though...They are keeping their promise of a few years back wherein they vowed to track and prosecute problem spammers.
