You didn't really think that Pringles cans are red simply because the company likes red,did you? Or that IBM's logo is blue because it's owned by men..?
Public school hallways and bathrooms are those disgusting shades of pale green and blue all across the nation for good reason: Because small fortunes of taxpayer dollars have been spent researching the effects of color on the human eye, and the psychological conditioning that certain shades will provide.
Those vomit-green and robin's-egg-blue shades, used in schools (and prisons), have been proven to promote tranquility and doccile behavior in most subjects.
Traditionally, color choices by marketers are the result of hours of brainstorming and many man-hours of testing, based on the following basic facts:
RED is purported to create a sense of excitement, making the target more eager to buy. A first choice for impulse items.
BLUE symbolizes stability, strength and trust. Every good company logo should contain a fair degree of blue.
GREEN is supposed to induce greed in your target audience. A prime choice for business opportunities.
You can see from the above examples that choosing which colors to use in a website goes beyond just what you like...The primary consideration is what do you want your potential customers to feel?
Again, a subtle con...but a con none the less.
