We could make this post with just one short sentence:
You get what you pay for.
Portland is a UK-based host, and in early 2004 they ran a promo for really cheap hosting; Plenty of disk space, a Gig of transfer with fair prices on more, and the basics ( ftp acct, unlimited email, cgi & perl scripts, etc) for less than $15 per year.
Heluva deal...but the problems were endless, and started on day 1:
The included ftp access would not accept my password, and since the only support options are one busy email address and a messageboard, this simple problem stretched itself over 2 months.
On the third month my site was finally posted, and now none of the scripts would run...so I was back to the support waiting-game.
BTW: I bought the Premium package for a few extra bucks...but that doesn't matter to support.
After another 2 months of intense script experimentation, I finally got 2 of the 13 total scripts to run...no thanx to Portland support.
The good folks at Matt's and BeCanada were the real inspiration behind getting those simple CGIs to run.
Not too long ago, some bonehead kid posted a bug into my site on Portland, and I reported this to them in the hope that they may be able to track/traqce the source...Their only response was to "repost the site via ftp", which of course has brought us full-circle;
I once again can't get ftp access, and have been waiting over 30 days for a response to any of the 3 emails sent to Portland support on the subject.
The plan apparently is to avoid me for another month or so until my hosting-year runs out.
The site in question is the Network's parent link,
www.50-50.us
As you can see, it's dead...and has been for months, and will remain so until we move the domain to a better and more responsive host.
*Note: Portland claims that my ftp problems are due to the fact that my domain starts with a number instead of a letter, and it confuses their ftp scripts.
* Also: The "WWW." is nescessary in order to get the site, and Portland has refused to respond to my requests that they configure their servers otherwise.
Portland.UK hosting is a severe disappointment.
Saving a few dollars is not a savings at all when so much time and effort is needed just to get half of what I paid for.
