First of all, this service may not be available in your area, but on the East Coast of the US it is one of the few alternatives to high-priced cable service.
Comcast has the high speed internet market sewn up in our state, but the cost is prohibitive at best.
One of the very limited options for consumers who simply can't afford $100 a month for internet is DSL by Frontier, starting at about $20 per month.
Sounds like a good price, right? Well it is...if you can get it to work.
Our personal account testing phase hasn't gone very well thus far. We received the self-install kit around December 21 and had it ready to go on 12/22/2015...but it would not connect to the internet. No service.
I called the 800 number for tech support, and after jumping through the basic hoops (verify your account, verify your identity, reset the box, etc.) they promised a service visit within 24 hours.
The next week, I went through the same procedure (call, hoops, promised help ) and still no service. The big difference this time? Now I have a pro-rated bill in my hands for the service that I have yet to receive.
I tried email this time, with a CC to every email account that I could rake from their site, and I got 3 replies, all exactly the same: Please re-enter our automated system so that we can have our hoops jumped through. That's why we created them, after all.
Today, January the 8th 2016 I went through the exact same procedure, but via the Live Chat system* with Christina, a rather patient tech considering that my own patience is beginning to run thin with this process.
*(I still have Comcast internet as a backup)
Having jumped through the same tired hoops, she has promised a visit from a tech on Monday the 11th at 9pm.
As for the original promises of "Blazing Fast Speeds" and "Free Amazon Prime for a year", I can only wait to see if they are true.
The Amazon Prime offer has a small catch of course: You must sign up for automated payments upon receiving your first bill. This I have not done as of yet, because I don't plan to pay for this service if they can't make it work.
The "Blazing Fast Speed" boast is of course dependant on your perspective; Compared to what? A dead turtle? sure, it looks pretty fast now...but can I stream with it? Time will tell.
As for this current update: Frontier is making a horrible first impression. The current plan, if they fail me once again, is to pack their equipment up on Tuesday and ship it back to them.
