Somewhere in the early-to-mid 90s a unique advertising concept was born: Eyeball Rental , comprising an advertiser's emailed message that members were paid to read.
Paid to Read programs (along with dozens of PaidToSurf sites) were swamped with advertiser dollars from companies of all sizes, from startups to giants like AOL.
The idea was a good one, and since the cash was still flowing thru the Web like Niagra, many companies jumped on this new medium...and then the bomb dropped.
The bottom fell out of tech stocks (or the shine just wore off for the young and young-at-heart investors with deep pockets), many lost bundles and just as many would-be Net Millionaires threw litterally millions of invested dollars into the promotion dumpsters.
In any event, the advertising market was totally re-made, and re-born...and those PaidToRead programs were washed away with the other forms of promotional waste.
(...seriously, who really READS the email..?
As a member, you scroll for the link, click it and move to the next, right?
The same rule that applies to advertisers also applies to PTR members: The money is in volume...)
Not too long ago, the PTR concept came back to life...and this second generation was conceived and spawned by a few very creative and aggressive script marketers...
One common mistake held true this second time however, and may very well seal the doom of this new breed;
PENNIES.
Paying 2 pennies to a member for opening an email and clicking a link may seem like a profitable business plan...but for whom?
The drop-out rate for this secong generation of PTRs is double the first...and the failure rate is nearly quadruple.
Why?
Why do you need to ask..How many people can work for less than $2/hour, and wait 3 Months for a $20 check...if they get paid at all?
Afterall, the average lifespan of a startup PTR this time around is less than 6 months...and many begin hemmoraging cash within 90 days.
Cut-throat ad pricing, cheating members, dead-beat advertisiers, and the dozens of daily headache-inducing details drive too many new webmasters of PTRs screaming into the woods...Only to realize that the PTR concept is so flawed as-is that their only option is to fold up and walk away.
A few of the strongest Gen-2 PTRs still remain, for now...because the newest version has just emerged this year, and this third generation of PTR is growing faster than any of their predecessors.
Promising a liveable income simply from reading emails, and boasting pretty amazing stats, the Gen-3 PTRs definately bear watching as well as some testing.
Our current tests are in their third week, and prior results & notes can be found on another thread in this catagory.
The new-gen PTRs being reviewed are as follows:
1. Huge Mails:
